Merkava I Main Battle Tank

The Merkava I, also known as the Merkava Mk.1, was Israel's first domestically developed main battle tank. Development began during the 1970s under the leadership of Israeli military engineer Major General Israel Tal, with the goal of producing a tank suited to Israel's operational requirements. The Merkava entered service with the Israel Defense Forces in 1979.

Unlike most contemporary main battle tanks, the Merkava placed its engine at the front of the hull. This arrangement provided an additional protective barrier for the crew and allowed the rear section of the vehicle to incorporate an access hatch and space for equipment, ammunition, or personnel under certain conditions. Crew survivability was a central consideration throughout the tank's development.

The Merkava I was armed with a 105mm M68 rifled cannon and equipped with secondary machine guns for engaging infantry and lightly armored targets. It saw combat during the 1982 Lebanon War, where it operated against armored vehicles and anti-tank threats. Experience gained from its deployment contributed to the development of subsequent Merkava variants, including the Mk.2, Mk.3, and Mk.4.

About the Tamiya Military Miniature Series

Tamiya's Military Miniature Series was established in 1968 and features an extensive collection of 1/35 scale plastic model kits representing tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, military personnel, and battlefield equipment. The series covers subjects from World War II through the modern era, including vehicles operated by armed forces around the world.

The series combines historical military subjects with model kit engineering intended to accommodate different building experience levels. Its standardized scale also allows builders to combine vehicles, figures, and accessories from compatible sets when creating military collections and historical dioramas.

      </details>
